ed as the lightning lit up the dark gray sky. The billowing clouds were descending closer and closer to the earth. Not a moment after the lightning, a large clap of thunder encompassed the deadened silence from the otherwise perfectly still environment. Then, a huge raindrop splattered like a bug on the windshield. And then another. And another. Focusing on the setting, Jen begins to think about what this might mean for the story. In this case Jen is interpreting what is happening in the story, due to the fact that she is gathering all the given information and taking it into account, she infers what a possible event can be. The idea of interpretation is that the reader can be able to analyze the clues given in the story and draw a conclusion.
It would be also possible to think that Jen is reading and responding, nevertheless, this would not be a correct choice since this process occurs before and after reading, when the reader predisposes the thoughts and wonders about the text; and at the end, compares it with the reaction about the story.
By doing so you are understanding the characters better and are more likely to form better predictions, not saying that they will be right, but a better chance nonetheless.
