If we had the right ingredients we could have stopped it. If all we needed was ingredients than the worst thing about it is that during that time we didn't have the ingredients.

I believe it was because the virus had a higher fatality rate, mainly affecting young adults from the ages of 20-40. The flu overwhelmed the immune system and turned it against itself, so a strong immune system wouldn't help.
