Considering that the Lincoln's assassination took place just a few short days after the official end of the Civil War, it was clear to see that Southerners still had a grudge against Lincoln. Southerners feared that Lincoln was going to try to free slaves, which was one of the main reasons states like South Carolina seceded after the presidential election of 1860. These fears came true with the passing of the 13th amendment. Now that the South was going to rejoin the Union, they would be at the mercy of Lincoln which many did not like. That is why John Wilkes Booth, a Confederate sympathizer, decided to kill Lincoln.
