Deborah and Florence grew a friendship based on the hate of men. Deborah's aversion for men came from her abuse, she was abused by a group of white men in a field. Florence's aversion for men came from her mother's preference, she always preferred her brother Gabriel, gave him the best food and clothes, and also all the attention. Florence was raised to be a wife, to be married and take care of her husband, she ended up marrying Frank because, with him she would have more freedom than marrying a southern husband.
