Bad timing on Herr Hitler's part, as reinforcements could not arrive due to snow. And Allied forces wouldn't give up. When asked to surrender, the American general McAuliffe replied, "Us surrender? Aw, nuts!" and wrote to the Germans, "To the German commander: Nuts!" (surprisingly, Germans didn't know what that meant)
