To demonstrate your growing knowledge of sociology, you say to a friend " I found out that sociologists use status in a different way. They don’t mean prestige. When they refer to status they mean: position a person occupies in a particular setting.

The term status has different meaning for a layman and for sociologist.  For a layman status, generally mean the prestige and living standards of the person whereas the sociologist see this term in different context. For them status means the position that the person possesses in a particular situation or setting.

Status in sociology is governed by the role played by the individual in a particular situation. For an example, a person may occupy the status of a student in school, an employee in an office or a son at home and he has certain set of values, characteristics, behaviour attached to that status to which is indicated to role.
