Why does Madge begin by agreeing that Mr. Miller may be right in his claim on the dog?

Mr. Walt and his wife refuse to accept all proofs of Miller's ownership of the dog. Mr. Miller being a strongly built man says with  a contemptuous expression on his face,<em> "I reckon there's nothin' in sight to prevent me takin' the dog  right here an' now." </em>

This threat makes Madge agree with Mr. Miller's claim of dog's ownership.
