In the short story "The kid that nobody could handle", why dose Helmholtz make a point of destroying the trumpet in front of Qui

nn and Jim? What is the message he is trying to send to Jim?

He is trying to show Jim that he is willing to destroy the thing he loves the most (the trumpet), because nothing matters if he can't get through to Jim. He felt that the trumpet could "buy a soul for Jim", but if it couldn't, then the trumpet was "worthless".
