Answer:

The answer to the question of who made the lamb is:

A. Jesus, the Lamb of God

Explanation:

The poem "The Lamb" by William Blake is a lyrical poem in which the speaker expresses his admiration of the lamb. This animal, as the speaker observes, is meek, innocent, harmless, beautiful. However, unlike the speaker who observes it, the lamb is not aware of who its creator is. The speaker asks, "Dost thou know who made thee?" And the speaker himself answers:

Little lamb, I'll tell thee;

Little lamb, I'll tell thee:

He is called by thy name,

For He calls Himself a Lamb.

He is meek, and He is mild,

He became a little child.

The one who is described as the Lamb of God and, therefore, has the same name as the animal ("He is called by thy name") is Jesus Christ. Jesus is the role model for all Christians, the example of meekness, innocence, harmlessness. Jesus, like the lamb, is offered as a sacrifice to save others. And, like the lamb, He does not fight against it. He, the creator of the lamb, is a Lamb Himself. That is is the answer the speaker gives us in the poem.

General Editor’s Preface

The reception given to a writer by his contemporaries and nearcontemporaries isevidence of considerable value to the student of literature. On one side we learna great deal about the state of criticism at large and in particular about thedevelopment of critical attitudes towards a single writer; at the same time, throughprivate comments in letters, journals or marginalia, we gain an insight upon thetastes and literary thought of individual readers of the period. Evidence of thiskind helps us to understand the writer’s historical situation, the nature of hisimmediate reading-public, and his response to these pressures.
