What caused the remarkable diversity of cultures in the americas in the centuries prior to contact with europeans?

There was very little communication between the various parts of land because they didn't have means to travel such distances. They also heavily based their culture around the nature that surrounded them, so you can see how many northern inuit tribes have cultures based around cold and snow while the southern ones have fire and volcanoes and similar things.
