Obligate carriers, or obligate heterozygotes, are those individuals that may be unaffected clinically, but must possess a copy of the mutant gene. For autosomal recessive conditions, obligate carriers can be the offspring of a parental mating of two carriers (50% of offspring will also be carriers).
