The process was cognitive dissonance
This is the process where people have inconsistent thoughts and behave weirdly in their decision making. In this case, they correlated the prevention of the destruction of earth with their prayer, even though it had nothing to do with it. This is opposite of their previous statement which said that the world would end on that date.
Tocqueville was a historian, political scientist, philosopher and politician who wrote a great book called Democracy in America. <u>He believed that the farther electoral rights were extended, greater was the need of extending them. Tocqueville justified that by saying that the strength of democracy increases after each concession and after each concession the demands increase, as well.</u>
Another cause of tension was that the Soviet Union was trying to spread communism. The U.S. was against communism and they took leadership of containment policy. The Containment policy was the U.S. approach to trying to prevent communism spreading.
