Freud is recognized as the discoverer of the three components of the personality. The Id is commonly known as the part where innate instincts and impulses are manifested. The Ego is the mediator between the conscious and unconscious processes of the mind, it is also where the sense of identity resides. Finally, the Superego is the self-critical part of the mind, usually based upon what´s been learned from parents and what cultural norms demand.
