Why is patsy's mother Eliza upset?
Because they are treated unfairly and live in poverty, and patsy's mother got sick of Pneumonia. They could'n't afford to call a doctor. But he gets money for his mom, clean's black boy name and gets a name for himself.

Example 2:

"means of" is dead phrase in this sentence - you could have concisely conveyed the same message by saying, "He achieved success only by hard work."

Some other common examples of dead phrases may be;
