A topic sentence is the focus of attention and the controlling idea of a paragraph: it tells the reader what the main and general idea of the paragraph is, and guide the content of the rest of the sentences, which should provide supporting details to the topic sentence. It can be found at the beginning, the middle or at the end of the paragraph, but it's most commonly placed at the beginning.
