"Equality of rights was given to slaves"

Slavery ended in the United States in the spring of 1865, when the Confederate armies surrendered. All slaves of the Confederation were freed by the Proclamation of Emancipation, which stipulated that the slaves of all the states that had split off from the Union would be free from that moment. The slaves of the border states and those of the parts of the South that were in the hands of the United States were released in December of that same year thanks to the Thirteenth Amendment. From this moment on, slaves were given equal rights, although they were not reflected at that precise moment if the foundations were laid for this to happen in the future.

Slavery came to an end in the south, so a new source of labor was required to be found to supplant the loss of slave labor in farmed plantations. The end of slavery was seen as a very significant development in the history of the United States, as it greatly boosted the nation’s image as a ‘nation of freedom and culture’. Newly freed slaves were accorded the same rights and responsibilities as that of any American citizen, with the freedom to reside and take up any occupation throughout all American territories. While most of the newly freed citizens tried to shed off the psychological trauma of their slave days, they still continued to face constant discrimination and cultural alienation.

Further Explanation-

The social and cultural assimilation of slaves within the American society was a long process that would begin by slaves getting a citizenship status, and equal rights to life. However, the freed slaves did not have any formal education or essential skills that were necessary for getting any jobs or holding a position within occupational circles. This sparked within them a desire to educate their minds, and achieve excellence at specific skills that would qualify them to undertake profitable professions. The Reconstruction Era, or the Great Reawakening Movement, was precisely related to the religious, social and cultural emancipation of the freed slaves. The Thirteenth Amendment Act heralded a new era of freedom for them, ending years of oppression and bonded labor. The discontinuation of slavery as an institution necessitated the Federal Government to search for alternative options that could supplant the use of forced labor in plantations within the Southern States. Certain instances and accounts of former slaves provide the information that freed slaves would return to work as waged laborers, and the general stigma of racial supremacy within the White population continued.
