He and his father had a strong claim to the throne. Edgar's father died in suspicious circumstances in 1054. Despite having the closest blood relation to Edward the Confessor he was too young. Although he did have the support of some nobles he needed more to become king. 

<span>Edgar Atheling was Edward the confessors nephew and that means he's a blood relative that also helped his claim to the throne. </span>
