Graduated cylinders are used for volume measurement. To determine the volume of irregular shaped tool, such as a metal bolt, the displacement method is useful. Therefore, the graduated cylinder is filled with water. The metal bolt is then placed into the cylinder. It will displace the water, so the difference in the volume, before and after the bolt is placed, is actually the volume of the metal bolt.</span>
