Slavery was abolished in the United States in 1865 as a result of the Civil War. Since then, the American government has protected the individual right to live free from slavery because, as it is understood by modern law and Human Rights perspective, slavery is against fundamental rights and dignity of every human being. In the same way, women's suffrage is a democratic right of every woman who lives in modern democratic society. This right was recognized for the first time by the American government on August 26, 1920. Also, granting civil rights and protection to all citizens is a way in which the government fulfills its purpose of protecting the fundamental rights of the individual. Some civil rights include protection against repression, discrimination of any type, and freedom of speech, assembly, and religion.
