Reaction formation is an example of a helpful defense mechanism. Reaction formation would be like if you feel angry or frustrated but choose to not play into those feelings but you choose to still maintain a positive attitude. Displacement is an example of a harmful defense mechanism. Displacement would be like if you get into a disagreement or you are upset with one person and you take it out on someone else.
