Whitman uses visual, auditory, and tactile imagery in the poem's first stanza. When he says "The ship has weather'd every rack", he conveys the feeling of exhaustion. (The ship is, of course, an allegory of America, whereas the Captain stands for President Lincoln, who was just assassinated.) "The bells I hear" is an auditory expression, which supports the people's exaltation, but also resembles the sound of death bells which mourn the Captain's death. The vessel is "grim and daring", grim because the trip had been extremely hard, but the cause was daring. "The bleeding drops of red" is a striking image of the tragedy of Lincoln's death. The blood was shed, so it was not a natural death. The Captain is "cold", which is an example of tactile imagery.

As a whole, this stanza juxtaposes two kinds of mood: the exaltation about the Captain's glorious deeds, as well as pathos and tragedy because of his death. The imagery makes the poem all the more exciting, as it lets us see, hear, and feel the speaker's state of mind - which is a fusion of personal and collective feeling toward America's journey to freedom and Lincoln's pivotal role in it.

solmaris [256]

Answer:

D). showing readers that Montag is mentally unstable.

Explanation:

The indirect characterization in the given excerpt displays that Montag has been badly conditioned by his dystopian society. His odd reaction on Clarisse's serious remarks on the firemen during their conversation reveals this conditioning and lack of social skills in him. The shallow and weird response from him gives a hint of mental insatbility and psychosomatic illness which was a product of his society's prohibition and restriction on him for enjoying the joys of nature. Thus, option D is the correct answer.

According to Elizabeth Blair, American culture is now "multiple cultures that are no longer broken down simply by ethnicity, rel
Maru [420]

Answer:

I agree.

Explanation:

America was created by the interplay of many different cultures in a single region. This is because as we know, America was supported by immigrants, who built the country based on their own cultural concepts and values. This made the cultural diversity that makes up American culture, go beyond ethnicity, religion and age, but it has to do with the way of life, personality, concepts and ethical and moral values that each American presents in relation to the country, citizens and the world. In addition, the diffusion and mixing of cultures in the country, made it impossible to define them according to religion and ethnicity, but it became a great respectable and admirable national concept.
