I'm not 100% sure which biology class you are in are you doing the moth activity? If so then I would believe that the light moth would be easier to see on a dark tree trunk

In low temperatures, hydrogen bonds between water molecules become stable as a result of the movement of these molecules are slow in low temperature which leads to the crystalline form of water due to hydrogen bond. This crystalline form is ice.
