PFD stands for Personal floatation device such as a floating vest. When people use this, their body will be always brought up to the surface of the water so it will be unlikely that they will be a victim of drowning.

PFD's is also known as personal flotation devices. These devices are used to safe life. They are used in play and work situations. It is also called life jackets and vest.

Further Explanation

Many people are familiar with the use of these devices; especially people used PFD's in boating, water sport activities and cruise ship. PDF's are also used by people that work on bridges, ship repair, and oil rigs. However, the United States coast guard set procedures that must be followed to ensure that workers wearing these are properly protected.

These devices works on buoyancy principle, it helps to keep individual head above water in case if such individual cannot, physically. However, there are different ratings for different types of Personal flotation devices. The rating relies on the buoyancy that is required and how the devices are applied.

The PDF's devices are rated type I, II, III, IV and V and these PDF’s are recommended by state laws and United States coast guard for different applications. Listed below is the minimum amount of buoyancy for each device.

For Type I, the minimum amount is 22 lbs

For Type II = 15.5 lbs.

For Type III (Flotation Aid) = 15.5 lbs.

For Type IV = 16.5 lbs.

For Type V = 15.5 – 22 lbs.
