Read the excerpt from an unsigned review in the St. Louis Globe, May 13, 1899. There are some pretty bits of description of Loui

siana Creole life, and there are two or three minor characters in the book that are drawn with a deft hand. After reading the whole story, it can not be said that either of the principal characters claims admiration or sympathy. It is a morbid book. What is this reader’s response to Chopin’s writing? The reader is critical of Chopin’s main characters. The reader favors Chopin’s Southern style. The reader admires Chopin’s careful characterizations. The reader is critical of the regional details.

The reader is critical of Chopin’s main characters

The reader kind of praises a couple of the minor characters, that they seem to be written well, but the main characters the reader does not seem to like at all. He says that they are not worthy of admiration or sympathy and that overall they contribute to the book feeling so morbid.

Answer:

The meaning of irony is the expression of one's meaning by using language that normally signifies the opposite, typically for humorous or emphatic effect. In 'The Gift of the Magi' by O. Henry' irony is represented when Jim gives Della the combs after she sold her hair. The story states," For there were the combs -- the special set of objects to hold her hair that Della had wanted ever since she saw them in a shop window. Beautiful combs, made of shells, with jewels at the edge --just the color to wear in the beautiful hair that was no longer hers. They cost a lot of money, she knew, and her heart had wanted them without ever hoping to have them. And now, the beautiful combs were hers, but the hair that should have touched them was gone." This persents irony because she sold her hair, so she couldn't use the combs she longed for.
