Vienna was the capital city of the period most prominent empire, the Holy Roman empire or the Austrian empire, and was thus very prosperous and peaceful. It therefore attracted a great deal of artists, musicians and scholars.   The great number of scholars led to its emergence as the cultural home of Europe.
