The Indus, Ganges, Nile, Euphrates, and Tigris are some of the major rivers that helped develop early civilizations. They left silt behind when they receded after flooding so the farmers grew crops. They were a great source of water for the civilizations. They provided a reliable transportation system.

How were the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers so important to ancient civilizations? Once the people who lived in the foothills moved to the river valley, they created irrigation systems to save precious water they needed. This helped because farmers now had water for their crops to grow and they would grow extra food. Mesopotamia an area geographically located between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. Mesopotamia means the land between two rivers. Mesopotamia began as urban societies in southern Iraq in 5000 BC, and ends in the 6th century BC.
