Explanation:

During the early nineteenth century, both Japan and China established an ultra-nationalist sentiment and a certain repudiation of all that was Western. The Chinese government and the Japanese government viewed their cultures as superior and should not be mixed with Western culture.

In order to prevent the traditional culture of these countries from having contact with the cultures they found inferior, Japan and China decided to close their borders to the west and isolate themselves from the world.
