A seismometer is an instrument that is used by seismologists to detect and measure ground motions, as caused by earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and explosions.

The old seismometer are the ones that record Seismic waves on paper using a timing device and a recorder to form a seismograph. The seismograph tells the details about the earthquake, such as the magnitude of the earthquake. Nowadays, more modern digitally seismograms used to record and detect earthquake.
