It was of great concern to the intellectuals in Britain of which Mary and Percy Bysshe Shelley were a part. The dehumanization aspect was chief among their criticisms. It was also Mary Shelley's inspiration for Frankenstein. The sense that he was a monster alienated from humanity was the heartrending aspect of the novel. Something the intellectuals anticipated would result from the workers involved in the factories of Birmingham.
