Within the madrassas or medical schools, physicians taught students through observation about medical procedures or treatment for the ill. These teachings were recorded by the students and learned to put in practice. They also studied medical treatises and theory.

Furthermore, a physician known for his achievements in pharmacy was Shapur ibn Sahl, who wrote a book about antidotes, a key element in the further development of Islamic medicine.
