The shantytowns were ways for the poor to have cheap housing, as terrible as those towns often were, they were a place for people to stay. Soup kitchens and bread lines were a way for people who couldn't afford food to get things to eat.
Technological advancements such as faster printing presses in the 1800's, decreased costs to print thousands of papers daily, and also helped to expand the press demographically. In 1814, The Times of London acquired a printing press capable of making a thousand of impressions per hour. Soon, newspaper became a mass cultural communication, who published news and opinions that cover the most diverse social interests.
