In the context of the Cold War, "containment" was a US strategy, wherein communism would be "contained" in the East. It didn't want communism to spread from the USSR to East European countries, China, Korea, and Vietnam. It was one of the most basic strategies in the Cold War.

I understand from the question that it's not own lands that the country is taking over, but other, new lands, potentially already occupied by other lands.
This is then imperialism- the will to built an empire (such as the British Empire), that is, have more land under control.
