The main benefit of having the narrator begin the story with events from his childhood is you gain a background story of the characters and the way they behave based on specific circumstances. Moreover, when the narrator begins with the story from the childhood, the flow of the story starts from the very beginning therefore there is a sense of continuity on the side of the reader or the listener as he/she goes through with the story. It also helps the audience understand more of the story.
