Britsh Empire was still current during World War I and had control over many territories. South Africa was one of the most relevant lands of hte British Crown. It has been controlled by Europeans since more than a century on that time, firstly by the Dutch and later by the British. It was only in 1931 when South Africa got its independence from the United Kingdom.
