Georgia sold 40,000,000 acres of land for $500,000 to the Georgia Company, the Georgia-Mississippi Company, the Upper Mississippi Company, and the Tennessee Company.  

Many Georgia politicians were stockholders in the companies buying the land.

The land was then re-sold for full profit, with massive payoffs to the Georgia politicians involved in the original sale

Explanation:

The Yazoo land fraud was a scheme developed in 1795.

Four land companies bought part of Georgia’s western lands, for a price far below its market worth. To do so, Georgia´s legislators were bribed, and by the 1796 election, there was a large turnover of legislators due to the anger this plot generated among the people.

Even though the new authorities quickly revoked the Yazoo act and paid the money back, by then most of the land had already been resold to third parties.
