Osmosis is the name given to the process by which water crosses a selectively permeable membrane. In osmosis water and other solvent move from a region that has a low concentration of solute to a region that has a high concentration of solute through a semipermeable membrane.

The osmosis of water across the cell is necessary to maintain the osmotic pressure of the cell by equalizing the concentration of solute in and out of the cell. Osmosis process does not require energy so it is a passive transport.
