As a result of the 1884 Berlin Conference, 1. Africa was divided without regard to ethnic groups. The Berlin Conference consisted of European imperial powers who convened to divide the African continent. These divisions greatly depended on the presence and abundance of natural resources rather than the presence of specific ethnic groups. As a result, the creation of nations in Africa still suffers from these ethnic divides (most notably the nation of Rwanda, which witnessed a large genocide between two groups pitted against one another by colonial powers in the early 20th century).
This was such an important phenomenon because at the time furs and skins were really expensive. Easily 8,000 for just a zebras hide, if not more. Africa was one of the biggest places to poach. Poaching is when an animal is killed illegally.
The two years prior to World War I in the region of the Balkans saw the rising of Serbian nationalistic Groups. Later came the assassination of the Archduke Ferdinand in the Balkan City of Sarajevo, main cause of the war.
