According to its mandate, the TRC's aim was to look into the past “to provide the best possible foundation for moving into a future based on healing and hope.” Although city authorities declined to participate, the commission held public hearings, reviewed historical documents, and interviewed hundreds of people.
The United States was forced to ask itself harsh questions about race and equality after WWII because many blacks and women had been called in a variety of ways to help their country, which did not treat them fairly back home--leading to accusations of hypocrisy.
There are many explanations. One is that it caused many wars because countries wanted to take the resources and food of other republics who were good at agriculture. Another is that it brought the rise of things like oppression and inequality. People started getting enslaved as prisoners of war while women were often considered inferior because they couldn't be as efficient at farming because physical strength. Also, it brought separations into classes based on wealth and also gender based division with men being the "strong bread winners" while women were just "housewives", since they couldn't work on the land as strongly as men. And it also made people shorter, weaker and changed nature. People stopped getting a nutritious diet because they kept eating the same food. While hunters and gatherers would have meat, fruit, vegetables and grain.
When Texas split from Mexico in 1836, its citizens were largely in favor
of annexation by the US. Most of US political leaders, however,
were against it. One main issue was that Texas practiced slavery.
Political leaders feared that dealing with Texas's slavery would stir up
even greater controversy. Perhaps an even greater concern, though, was
that Mexico was not happy about the loss of Texas. US political leaders
feared the war that the annexation of Texas would no doubt spark
