When writing an essay, the main idea to discuss is the THESIS STATEMENT. It is always placed at the end of the introductory paragraph and it may be simple (one idea) or complex (two or more ideas). In more technical words, we could say that the thesis statement may have one theme and one rhyme, or one theme with two or more rhymes.
The ideas stated in the thesis statement should be discussed in the same order they have been presented.
