They add suspense from cryptic information to the reader and foreshadowing certain important events in the future. For something like mystery an author  might include that last night someone left a knife on the table but now it was missing. Next day, same knife found in target's body. For horror, It's smart to use the rule that we fear what is unknown. For example if a author is describing about a murder in the city but there are no clues to how the targets die or when, only a location to when next, we the reader only have limited information which corners us to limited possibilities
