The first mail order catalog was significant because it paved the way for other corporations starting mail order catalogs. It gave consumers a new way to purchase things and a broader selection that probably weren't seen in the stores.

In reality, that first mail order catalog has etched its way into our modern day society in the way of online ordering systems, as well.
