The Southern states threatened to secede should Abraham Lincoln be elected president (which he was) because they knew he was pro-Union and supported the abolition of slavery, the very institution the South was built on.

Lincoln was very strongly against slavery, and slavery was a favoured view at that time. People in the South were upset about him winning because they liked slavery. However the North wanted to abolish slavery.

Explanation: The Glorious Revolution has been dubbed the "Bloodless Revolution" as it is the only revolution that was completely peaceful. The French Revolution was the exact opposite: it was the bloodiest revolution with the largest death toll. Thousands of French people guillotined.
