The Andes Mountain Range is a result of a oceanic-continental convergence. This mountain range stretches alongside the western coast of the South American continent, in close proximity of the convergent boundary between the South American tectonic plate, which is continental one, and the Nazca tectonic plate, which is oceanic one.

The Nazca plate is subducting beneath the South American plate, and it managed to lift up the land in close proximity to the boundary. As the land was lifting up more and more, over time a mountain range was formed, the biggest and dominant one in South America, the Andean Mountain Range.
