During world war 2, the civilians were called partisans
Partisans were something like rebels or freedom fighters in areas conquered by Germany. The term stuck and was used a lot to describe especially those fighters from the Balkans area where partisans who were communists fought against Italians and Germans and later became even more important when the war ended.
