Do you mean in the play oedipus rex (oedipus the king) by sophocles? is this the part about her suicide? the play isn't split in

to episodes or acts originally and i've only read the original greek. anyway, she killed herself because she could bear the burden of what she had done. she had slept with her own son, who also murdered her husband/his father. also, she had given birth to oedipus' children. so she then realized her children were the product of incest. she killed herself because she loved both her son and husband dearly and could not bear to face the fact that the prophecy turned out to be true.

Read the excerpt from Flannery O'Connor's The Life You Save May Be Your Own." The ugly words settled in Mr. Shiftlet's head like
Elden [556K]

The simile compares the ugly words to a group of buzzards.

Buzzards are a scavenger bird, preying on things that are dead or near dead. They are not considered good or kind animals. The buzzards sitting in a tree are just waiting to swoop down and devour the meal. The words are similar in that they get into his thoughts and mind, picking at whatever is left. It reminds the reader that Mr. Shiftlet is a damaged soul. He is not who the women think he is.
