Abraham Lincoln had conceived the reconstruction process and was poised for a show- down with congress before his assassination. His predecessor and vice-President took over the reconstruction but did not heed congress in its implementation which leads to contemporary arguments that he implemented his own fashion of presidential reconstruction.
