The first two sections of the story possess a rather indifferent tone, especially when describing the man about to be executed.

The second section shows a flashback explaining the circumstances that led to Farquhar finding himself on the bridge surrounded by several soldiers. The author uses a mocking tone to describe Farquhar’s love for the Confederacy and how he gets tricked by the Union soldier.

The third section, apart from the last sentence, is written in a hopeful and optimistic tone. This part of the story is a dream sequence and is told from Farquhar’s perspective, revealing his romantic view of life. The last sentence reverts to an indifferent and unsympathetic tone.
