General Zaroff from Richard O'Connell's "The Most Dangerous Game" began gaming with weaker humans due to his boredom of hunting for animals. Montresor, on the other hand, from Edgar Allen Poe's "The Cask of Amontillado" gets revenge on his friend after he felt insulted for numerous times.

Both are schemers who held the idea of gaining their right to do whatever they want without consideration for the life of others. Colonel Zaroff planned on using Sanger as his prey, hunting him like he would hunt a wild animal. Likewise, Montresor lured his victim Fortunato into the vault on the pretext of tasting new wine. The irony is that both characters know their victims and had planned exactly how to 'toy' with them, while getting their own satisfaction. And both are murderers in their own ways, though their motive may have not been the same. Zaroff did it for enjoyment while Montresor did it for revenge.
