They both sold their most prized possessions to pay for a gift for each other. Della cuts off all her hair and sells it to buy a gift for Jim. She buys him a chain for his watch. Jim sold his watch to buy a gift for Della. He bought her combs for her long beautiful hair. They both sacrificed their favorite things for the love of one another.
