If I remember correctly, he compares the jurors to D. a group of people on a streetcar.
He is being tried because he killed the Arab, even though he feels that he is being judged because he didn't cry at his mother's funeral. The novel, The Stranger, is an existential novel about what it is to be barely alive and what it means having an empty life.
